Designing for Dark Mode: Best Practices
Dark mode is more than inverting colors. Learn how to create a polished dark theme that users love.

Dark mode has gone from a niche preference to a mainstream expectation. But implementing it well requires more than swapping black and white — it demands careful attention to contrast, color perception, and visual hierarchy.
Color Selection
Avoid pure black backgrounds. Dark gray (#1a1a2e or similar) reduces eye strain and creates a more sophisticated feel. Use muted, desaturated colors for text and accents.
Elevation and Depth
In dark mode, lighter surfaces appear elevated. Use subtle lighter shades for cards and modals instead of relying solely on shadows, which are less visible against dark backgrounds.
